Learning Objectives:

Application of concept mapping as a visual thinking strategy teaches student how to use pharmacology and nursing knowledge to create clinical reasoning and decision-making as novice nursing students. By using a concept map for common medications, students are introduced to clinical decision making quickly and early in their education and gain confidence. This confidence translates to motivation and the courage to withhold or administer a medication using evidence-based rationales and assessment findings. - Students will recognize subjective, objective assessment findings and laboratory data in order to withhold or administer medications ordered. - Students will create clinical reasoning and decision-making to withhold or administer common medications found in the adult, acute care setting.

Strategy Overview:

The most common medications novice nursing students are administering in their first clinical experiences are: -anticoagulants -anti infectives - diuretics - opioids - mental health medications - antihypertensives - antidiabetics
